  1. In Egypt, there are more than a hundred pyramids. They were built over a period of a thousand years. Almost all are near Cairo, just south of the Nile Delta: these include the most famous, the group at Giza.

The oldest in Egypt is Djoser's pyramid (a ziggurat or step pyramid, the oldest kind). It was built around 2650 BC..

But pyramids are also found elsewhere in the world. There are ancient Mesopotamian ziggurat pyramids in Iraq and in Iran. Archaeologists have dated one of these, Sialk in Iran, at around 5,000 years old.

And the world's largest ancient pyramid, Tlachihualtepetl, is in Cholula, Mexico. It was begun around 2,200 years ago.

You can find descriptions and images of Sialk and other Mesopotamian pyramids here: http://www.crystalinks.com/pyramidiraq.h...

and there's a really nice descriptive article with pictures about the Cholula pyramid here: http://www.mexonline.com/cholula-pyramid...

  2. The Pyramids are in Egypt. I don't know how many there are but there are 3 important ones in Giza. The Ancient Egyptians built them as a tomb for their late Pharaohs. The links below should provide you with more information.
