Where are some cheap yet safe places to stay in Paris?

I am planning a trip there in November and I want to stay for cheap but safe. I also want to be near the metro.

Avoid Pigalle as this is the red light district. Areas to the north east of Paris are not the best places to be either.

As for hotels try the links below. Most are just outside of the centre of Paris but are well served by public transport.

You won't find many (if any???) hotels in the centre of Paris below 40€ a night. You can save as much as 5€ (possibly more) a night, by staying just outside of the Paris "Péripherique" (see Wikipedia link below).

Montmarte and Montparnasse (SP).  Get a Lonely Planet Guide book on France and follow their directions, you will save the cost of the book on your very first day!

Almost every place in central Paris is safe so you need not really concern yourself with that. Unlike most American cities, the poor in Paris live on the outskirts rather than in the center.

A step up in price but still very reasonable are the following:

Hotel Tiquetonne    

6 rue Tiquetonne

A single with a shared bath is as little as 30 euros. With private facilites the price is 50 euros

Hotel de la Vallee    

84-86 rue Saint-Denis

The rue St. Denis is a bit sleazy with "working girls" lunging about but perfectly safe. Singles (hsared facilities) run 48 euros.

Hotel des Allies    

20 rue Berthollet  

Singles with shared facilities in this Latin Quarter hotel run from 35-47 euros.

Hotel du Marais "Bistrot"    

16 rue de Beauce

This place in in the Marais and really cheap at as little as 25 euros for a single (shared bath).

Hotel du Sejour  

36 rue du Grenier St-Lazare

Another Marais hotel with singles as little as 35 euros.
