Where are some fairly fun places to take teenagers for vacation in the US?

It really depends on the time of year and their particular interests but there are definitely events all over the US that they would love.  If you go to http://www.ytbtravel.com/soulstar370 and click on Vacations then on Tickets and Attractions and they have a break down of interest areas and events in each state as well as other areas outside the US and cruises that may interest them and you.

Some of my cousins went to NYC a few weeks back.  They went to a Broadway show, had a picnic in Central Park , shopped, visited the many museums and finished it up going on a helicopter tour. They had a blast.

Whiskeytown NRA.  They can scuba, snorkel, swim, kayak, water-ski, ski,  hike,  mountain bike, run, sun-bathe, camp, sail, fish, hunt, and return home in better condition than they left.

All the previous post have great ideas. I love the Whiskeytown area. Continue on the road west to the Scotia lumber mill tour or take the road east to shasta lake, caves. Then to Mt Shasta burney falls and Lassen Nat'l Park. Don't forget to Whitewater raft the trinity river for fun.
