  1. The Poilâne bakery in Paris introduced sour dough bread to France in 1932. They have become a household name. Their website (English version available) is here: http://www.poilane.fr/

Fact is though that just about any neighborhood in Paris will have a superb artisanal baker. They've had a spirited argument in France as to whether someone who simply sells bread that is made somewhere else should be allowed to call themselves a baker. The government ruled that they cannot.

Great bread is one of true joys of Paris.

  2. Fanciest "Patisserie" and food shop in Paris is Fauchon's(26 Place de la Madeleine)---don't miss visiting it and trying some of the great varieties of cakes, pastries they have for sale.

    Other Parisian locations:

    Barthelemey, 51 rue de Grenelle

......in London, don't miss the "Food Halls" in Harrod's Department Store.
