My friends and I are planning to go to Vancouver Island this weekend, and I heard that there are some real breath-taking cliffs and sights to see. Can anybody tell me which cliffs are the best to see, and where they are?

  1. The Island is pretty big.

If you are going to Victoria I suggest a quick trip up Mount Douglas. It gives a pretty nice view.

If you are out near Sooke the Sooke Potholes are pretty stunning. You want to go up the river a bit to where they were going to build the old luxury resort.

Both China beach and Sombrio were nice to camp on.

If you go out as far as Port Renfrew the place they call Botanical Beach is really freaky.

It is full of small tide pools and at low tide it is like walking across a huge stone patio with a few hundred little aquariums set into it. Each with a different collection of small beasties in it.

It is really hard to tell you what to go see on a weekend trip because there are too many places to choose.

    As for city sights, hmmm.

I am limiting this to Victoria area too because I assume you are going there if it is just a weekend trip.

In Victoria itself you should poke around the old chinese market (Market Square) and Fantan Alley for a couple of hours, Fan Tan Alley is the narrowest street in Canada and was once the home of opium dens, gambling, and prostition.

Now it is just full of little touristy type stores but it is still good to see.

This Chinatown is the oldest in Canada and the second oldest in North American

Also try to visit The Tam Kung Temple.

It is the oldest chinese temple in Canada and it is not what you are likely expecting.

Burn a couple of Joss sticks for old Uncle Tam.

Victoria also has a surprising little art gallery with a great Japanese art collection.

The Lieutenant Governor's mansion and grounds might be worth a vist too. Nice grounds and a nice view.

(and see the museum and parliament buildings if you have time., I seldom have time)

I also very highly recomend having afternoon tea or coffee in the Bengal Room of the Empress Hotel while you are there.

Good luck, don't overplan, and enjoy your vist.

  2. I just got back from Vancouver last night! What a FABULOUS city! I've been through Europe, Vancouver can't be beaten. Can't say I know about cliffs, to REALLY answer your question. Kits Beach, Stanley Park, and the CAPILANO SUSPENSION BRIDGE AND PARK, which is in the middle of a temperate rainforest has MANY additional treetop walkways--you feel like you're in a labyrinth of treehouses. Much info there about the eco-system, and breathtaking views. The sea-wall walk at Kits is very cool. Lots of shells, starfish, sea-glass-- reminds me of my favorite American beaches, but about 40 years ago. You can rent funky retro bikes and take a pleasant 3 hr. (pretty flat) ride around the island, something I MEANT to do. Hit Stanley Park (everybody says) which has the most totem poles in Canada, I think-- a great spot I've heard repeatedly but just drove through, myself. Don't miss the tiny ferry boats to Granville Island-- great food, cool little shops and more. You'll have a great time if you do nothing but sit on a rock and stare into The English Bay.

    go to Stanley Park!!!

you can hike, bike, just lay down on the grass, have picnic and basically, do just about anything there!!!!

    the place is truly AMAZING!!!

There's the Brockton Point Lighthouse, Totem Poles and Prospect Point, where you could have a great view of the Lions Gate Bridge and Grouse Mountain from the top of Prospect Point.

You might also want to consider going to Cypress Mountain and watch the beautiful sunset from there. It's only 30 minutes away from the heart of downtown Vancouver.

It also offers one of the best ski resorts in town!!!

It'll aslo be fun to visit Gastown's Historical Steamclock, which was designed and built by Ray Saunders in 1977. It belches steam and hoots out the famous Westminster chimes "Big Ben" theme!!! i love it!!!

you could also spend a perfect day at Granville Island.

Granville Island lies below the Granville Street bridge. The public market has everything you need and the island also offers lots of places to dine.

You could also bring your dog and jog on the beach of Vancouver Downtown.

the beach is not good for swimming but it's really nice to see in Downtown.

You should also dine at THE EATERY... The Funkiest place for Japanese food indeed!

    hehehe yum yum!!!

Walk around the structure of Canada Place to get a good panoramic view of the city!!!

    fantastic!!!

Don't miss the Capilano Suspension bridge too!!!

It is said to be Vancouver's oldest tourist attraction, which was originally built in 1889.

It stretches 450 feet (137m) across and 230 feet (70m) above the Capilano River.

Go and visit the Lighthouse Park too, if you have more time.

It contains the largest uncut, coastal-elevation trees in the Lower Mainland, which a spectacular view!!! This is within a 10-minute walk of the parking lot.

Also, ride a ferry (about an hour and a half) going to Victoria Island to complete your Vancouver experience!

It is said to be the vacation capital of Canada.

Go to the Parliament building to have a good view of marina; then, have a tea break at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. It is one of Victoria's highlights, with its true British tradition and atmosphere!!!

Before going back to the city, have a soup and salad at Pagliacci's, which is very popular to the locals for is great pasta, desserts, and wonderful ambiance!!!
