I do not really recommend that you buy from street jewelers and stores. I recommend that you go online. you will get better quality and size and save up to 60% of what you were going to pay in any jeweler.

I have no direct experience, but hear a lot of commercials on the radio for Robbins brothers....apparently they specialize in engagement rings and that is all they sell.  I would think you would get good help and a nice selection.  The website is www.robbinsbros.com,

Wow.  Chicago is one of the shopping capitals of the world.  How about Tiffany's?  There are 2 in Chicago and one in Oak Park.

Don't!

Chicago tax is way more expensive than neighboring Indiana.  I say, go over there (or any of the other surrounding states) and shop for rings there.  

It may not make a huge difference if you are planning on getting a less expensive ring but I am sure taxes will add up if you plan on spending a lot.
