  1. Union Pacific's biggest yard is in Dallas, Texas I beleive. Texas is Union Pacific's main state, and Union Pacific is the biggest railroad in the USA!

  2. The largest hub is Chicago.  It has been for many years.More railroads operate out of there on more main lines than anywhere in the world.  Number two is Kansas City.  I am proud to say my hometown took this honor from our crossstate rivals in St. Louis in the 70's.  St Louis is three.  Most of the other hubs are in the midwest dividing line on either the Missouri or Mississippi rivers.  These would be Omaha/Council Bluffs, Memphis, and Minneapolis/St. Paul.

I am defining hub as a city where two or more railroads connect and interchange.  Most feature a terminal road that connects the trunk lines, such as Kansas City Terminal, Belt RR of Chicago, Indiana Harbor Belt, or the Terminal RR Assn. of St Louis.  Others feature direct interchange or a combination of both.  I'll put in a plug for my favorite small hubs too.  St. Joseph, MO and Atchison, KS.

  3. bailey yard largest rail yard in the u.s owned by the UP IN California

  4. Also, remember the Northeast and places like Penn Station and Philadelphia's 30th Street Station.  There is also LAUPT (Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal) and Seattle's famous King Street Station.

  5. Bailey Yard is the largest in the U. S. but it is located in North Platte, Nebraska, not California.

  6. I believe that the largest passenger rail hub in the USA is New York's Penn Station.

  7. Don't forget St. Louis, Dallas-Fort Worth, or New York City.  I believe you may find Denver on that list too.

  8. The largest yard in the country is UP's Baily Yard in North Platte, Nb.

Some of the major hubs in the west are Minneapolis/St. Paul, Denver, Seattle, Chicago, & Pasco. Another large, but not major hub is Laurel, Mt. Montana Rail Link's Laurel Yard is the largest rail yard between St. Paul, Mn & Pasco, Wa.   Tracks come in from 5 different directions at Laurel: 1.west from Livingston, Bozeman, Helena, ect... 2. east from Glendive/Forsyth 3. up from the Powder River Basin & Sheridan, Wy 4.north from Great Falls 5. up from the front range line/Denver, Co/Greybull, Wy. MRL processes both its own trains & BNSF trains at Laurel. Laurel can be a busy place with trains coming in off of 5 different main-lines 24/7. At Laurel, what they do is they break the trains up & reorganize them by destination. The BNSF pays MRL to "block" their trains like this. Unit trains like grain & coal trains pass through the yard, because their cars are destined for the same place. Sound like Laurel qualifies as a hub, doen't it?

I'd say that Chicago is both a freight & passenger hub. I believe that Chicago is Amtrak's largest hub, followed up by places like Seattle, L.A., & New York City.

  9. Bellevue, OH Norfolk and Southern, Willard, OH CSX Rail, I know of these 2 because I live next to one of these yards and work next to the other.
