Where are the best Barbecues and the best steak houses in Kansas City, Mo?

I am going to a conference there in October. Last time there I did not like the BBQ or the steakhouse. I liked Stroud's and will be going back there again. I was taken to a steakhouse inside of Harrah's, and don't remember the BBQ. Niether were good.

Wow! Did you pick a controversial topic!  BBQ and Steaks are the two things that Kansas Cititians are proud about and you will hear some different answers on both.  Everybody is an expert on this topic.

When I first moved here 9 years ago, all I heard about was Gates & Sons.  It was okay to me, but I'm not a big fan of the BBQ.  Jack Stack is probably the only place I really like.  The sauce is good, and I absolutely love their baked beans.  They put little pieces of brisket in them.  And they also have this cheesy corn stuff.  I can eat just that and be happy.  As for steaks, the Hereford House (the one downtown) is can't miss.  They aren't as pricy as some of the rest of them and they ambiance is good.  I also like the mashed sweet potatoes.  Whatever you decide, just try and if you don't like it don't get discouraged.

I agree with Hereford House and also Jack Stack. They are probably the best in my book.  I have never had a bad meal at either of them.  Both are within a few miles from each other too.

Herford House for steak, but for BBQ it has to be Gates BBq. sorry Author Byants SUCKS!

WHOOOAAA. These people are killing me with the Hereford House---DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! I mean, it's ok..but go to Jess and Jim's in Martin City (right off of 435 and Holmes) they have MELT in your MOUTH steak and that's no lie---believe me, I have spent thousands of dollars trying to find the best steak...and THEY HAVE IT.

As for BBQ--I am personally a GATES fan---they have the most tender meat and the BEST sauce. OOHHH man, that sounds so good!

For steak, try Hereford House. They have multiple locations across the city. Or try Ruth's Chris on the Plaza. Another good choice would be Jess and Jim's in Martin City, which is a little far south if you are staying downtown...but worth the trip. As far as barbecue, it is hard to go wrong....though there are a few places I don't care for, like Arthur Bryant's, Jack Stack and Rosedale. My favorites are Oklahoma Joe's, Danny Edwards and Zarda. Oklahoma Joe's is definitely at the top of that list...try the Z-Man sandwich.
