Where are the best beaches in Italy?

I've heard that the best beaches of Italy are on the Adriatic side (the side where tourist don't go to).

If your going to be in Rome for a while, I recommend a day trip to Sperlonga (half way between Rome and Naples, accessible via train and bus).  It's the best beach I've been to.  And very few tourist were present in the height of summer.  

Other than that city, I wouldn't travel to Italy for its beaches alone.

My first choice is the Gallura in Sardegna, just North of the Costa Smeralda, less people but just as nice.

Sardinia is right at the top of list. The Egadi islands in Sicily should come second. Both are paradise with turquoise water. Then there are the volcanic Aeolian islands with deep blue sea and raw rocky terrain. Google them up for images.

The most picturesque Italian sea views for me are found in Liguria which may not have the best beaches but definitely the prettiest coastline. Check out Porto Fino and Cinque Terre.
