  1. The Red Lion corner of Slave St and Gasworks Rd. Good pint of mild and pickled eggs. Big gym at back, it's where the Didsbury Slasher trains. very upmarket, and they've got a three legged cat. Local chavs cut one off..

  2. Your best bet is to go to gyms and test them out, most of them will give you a free day to try it out and then choose the one you prefer. Try and get one either as close to home as possible, or on a route that you'll be taking to uni or wherever so you'll use it more as it's not out of your way to get to.

Also, barter with the gym, as because of the credit crunch, gym memberships are falling as people just don't have as much disposable income to play around with so gyms are probably getting desperate to get you to join up. Say no to a joining fee and maybe see if you can get a better deal out of them.. just explain that money is an issue with you being a student, they may be able to do a better student deal for you.

The best places to go out in Manchester would also depend on what kind of music/food etc that you were into. There's plenty of student haunts and all you can eat chinese places.. and also decent clubs like sankeys if you like your dance music (house etc). If you're willing to spend a bit more and like Italian food then there's a gorgeous Italian near to Kendals on Deansgate (http://www.sancarlo.co.uk/) but there's also plenty of pubs that do food that won't break the bank. There's the moon under water on deansgate (along with a whole host of other bars and restaurants) and Edwards bar @ piccadilly etc.

There are loads of places for you to go drinking, piccadilly, oxford road, deansgate locks, the g*y village, the printworks, castlefield etc etc.
