Where are the best places to go in Italy?

Three places - Sardinia, le Marche and Piedmont. All are off the beaten track but all are wonderful.

Piedmont offers huge alpine peaks, Gorgeous hilly countryside a wonderful wine route,historic cities and stunning little towns. It also has the best food in Italy

Marche is beautiful, loads of Renaissance history and is in many ways the undiscovered Tuscany.

Sardinia has some of the best beaches in the world and a lot more besides

Whole Italy is to see. It depends how much time have you to visit. However, best cities could be (from the North): Venezia (Veneto region), Firenze, Pisa, Arezzo (Toscana region), Perugia, Orvieto (Umbria region), Roma (Lazio region), Napoli (Campania region), Palermo, Taormina (Sicilia region). Also it depends about wich your preferences are:

Etruscan, Middle Age, Renaissance you find in Toscana, Umbria, North of Lazio. Ancient Romans quiet all Italy but full of evidences are Lazio, Toscana and Campania (Pompei, Ercolano, Paestum). Panoramas and Mountains: all the chaine of the Alpi in the North and the best is the Dolomiti mountains in Trentino-Alto Adige region. Sea and sun: all coasts of Italy but very good are islands: Eolie islands (Sicilia region) (Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, they are pearls lost in the blue sea), Capri, Ischia (Campania region). Food and wine: good wherever you'll go. Love and smiles: how much your heart can hold into. Ciao.

There are some amazing places there.  I only stayed north of Rome, but would reccommend many places.  

I guess the thing is what you like....some places have a very renaissance feel eg Florence/Rome, others are more medieval eg Bologna, Seina.  Florence is very busy and has some amazing museums and lovely sights there. Places nearby worth visiting are Pisa, Lucca and other little towns in the vicinity which are often a bit quieter....and siena is not that far away either. Also Florence is expensive accommodation wise, so you might want to look at other areas nearby to stay in......I guess it depends on how much you want to spend

I stayed in a little hillside village caled Montepulciano, which again has a different feel, great views of the surrounding landscape.

I actually rather enjoyed Verona too it has the 3rd largest colloseum where in warmer months they have operas there (if you like that) and it has a nice feeling too.  It also has "Juliet's Balcony", which is sweet.

Capri and sorrento are supposed to be absolutly lovely (i missed these..grrr) and Pompeii was great. I wolud not recommend Naples as a place to stay (it just loked dirty and run down and a bit seedy).  You can do a day trip from Rome which visists all 3 places if you like.

Venice of course is worthy of a visit and close to Verona.  Its quite different in feel to all other cities. (I found some of the back streets a little dark and spooky) but staying along the main streets and looking around is quite neat.  Getting the boats (NOT gondolas..they are freaking expensive!!!) along the canals is a great way to see the place and visiting the murano glass factory is something to see as well

You have to go Taormina,Sicily. Beautiful, charming and so full of culture. High in the mountains you can see Mount Etna. Another must see.

I'm an Italian girl, I come from Sardinia. If you would like to sea the most beautiful sea all over the world and get to know the most friendly people, you should come here in Sardinia! It'a such a beautiful island! And the way we prepare food is amazing! ;)

However, it depends on what would you'd like to see in Italy, when you'd like to come and how much money you'd like to spend! :)  See ya! Ciaooooo!! :)))

there are so many it depends how much time (and money) you have to spend.

Are you going to the north center or south of Italy?

do you want to see the natural beauty of the country or do you prefer cities and towns of art?

Thats like asking, "what is the best ride in Disneyworld." Italy is loaded with things to see. Virtually every town has some level of art and many of the churches are beautiful. Just pick and city or town and make a day of it. I lived there three years and loved every day of it. The people are so kind and gentle.
