Depends..if you like action, shopping, dancing, etc...is Copacabana.....but if you want tranquility, go to Barra da Tijuca.

The hostels are a bit of a rip off. I went with a friend and it worked out a better deal to rent an apartment between us for a week which we did on the spot (obviously you need a bit of Portuguese to do that) but we got a bedromm *** kitchen with a TV for cheaper than a dorm bed
