Where are the best places to volunteer that you will get a great learning experience from?

I want to volunteer somewhere but I have no idea where. What are the best places to volunteer and get a great learning experience? I'm 16 BTW. Thank You.

during the summer i love to volunteer at the hospital where my mom works but theres lots of places like nursing homes, veterinary clinics, soup kitchens, etc. =D

Volunteer at a local  elementary school mentoring at-risk students.

I did it for 6 years.   Any encouragement you can give a child who's failing or has a bad family life will help him and will probably change his life.

It also gave me a great sense of worth.   Kids are wonderful.

You may want to join some type of group dedicated to helping the community. That way, you will be exposed to several different types of volunteering opportunities. You will also get the chance to meet new people and hopeful make some friends in the process.

While I was in college, ( i know you are not old enough yet, but just as an example) I joined a greek organization. We volunteered for teach for america, the red cross, ronald mcdonald house. We also collected items like pop tabs, yoplay lids and old cell phones for other groups.

hospital! its fun and u get great expirience and education form it. i love doing it, i am also 16! but u should actually decide what u wanna be when u get older, and volunteer somewhere that has to do with that area. like doctor- hospital

veternarian- vets and so on. u could also volunteer at nursing homes, or commnity service, like picking up trash and taking care of community.

Just some ideas.  Lay out a plan for yourself in your volunteer activities.  Let the organization you work for know your terms and time frame for service.

Plan on different types and lengths of service.  For example, plan an internship in a different field each summer (some internships are paid!)

Talk to your school counselor to find out how you might turn internships/apprenticeships/volunteer work into school credit!

Your counselor may also have vast resources to link you up with internship opportunities.

Remember also that a curriculum vitae or resume need not be grounded solely in one field of interest. Having varied experiences makes you a well-rounded, creative problem-solver!

Print this and take it to your counselor ASAP. You have unlimited potential and your counselor will want to help you begin planning college.

Keep a journal of your volunteer experiences. It need not be extensive, but may prove a valuable resource to you later when writing application essays for colleges, financial aid and contests.

Depends what type of experience you are looking for, if you want to stay around the area and volunteer certain evenings or days everyonce in awhile I'd recommend finding a local Red Cross and seeing what you could do with them. For an even better experience with helping people, try volunteering for a diaster relief team or a missions trip. I went with a diaster relief team down to Pensacola, FL to help clean up after hurricane Ivan and the experience is something you can only feel and not explain. Helping people who have lost everything, lost hope, and spirits seem to be nonexistant, and then repairing their homes, helping them out, and seeing the smile on the face by the time you leave is something I recommend everyone do at least once in your life.

I always liked animal shelters. You have to really love animals though! Also homeless shelters can be very rewarding but you might want to ask a parent to go with you on that one. Also check with your school or church, they might have a volunteer club or organization that can set you up with ideas and you can get all your friends to join! I think it is very admirable that you want to spend your free time helping people. Good Luck!
