  1. A lot of politicians just eat the heavily subsidised food in parliament house, so us taxpayers are always picking up some of the tab!

  2. I've seen Alexander Downer in the cigar lounge at the Hyatt.  I have seen John Anderson (former Deputy PM) in The Lobby.  A lot of the pollies like The Boat House.  And Amanda Vandstone eats from a trough outside of parliament house :p

  3. According to Wikipedia, these are Canberra's splurge restaurants.  I wouldn't be surprised if they go to these, especially the Hyatt!

        *  Water's Edge, 40 Parkes Place, Parkes. tel 02 6273 5066.

        * Aubergine Restaurant, 18 Barker St, Griffith. tel 02 6260 8666.

        * The Chairman & Yip Restaurant, 108 Bunda Street, Canberra City. tel 02 6248 7109. Australian/Asian.

        * Ottoman Cuisine Restaurant, 3A Mugga Way, Forrest. tel 02 6273 6111. Australian/Turkish.

        * The Promenade Cafe at the Hyatt hotel, Commonwealth Ave, offers daily buffet dinners in it's restaurant from 6pm and "high teas" from 3 to 5pm.

        * The Lobby King George Tce, Parkes. King George Tce, Parkes, lunches Mon - Fri, dinners Tue - Sat. tel 02 6273 1563

  4. Aussies Cafe (02) 6277 5047, 0 Capital Hill Canberra 2600

    Open: Mon-Fri parliament sitting 8am-8pm, parliament not sitting 8, Closed: Pub hols; Licensed, BYO.

    This is where the real action in Parliament House takes place - it's where pollies deal, lobbyists pitch, journos gossip, and everyone meets. From its very beginning Aussies has had inside connections - originally operated by, and named after, Bob Hawke's former driver, Ozvaldo - its now run by Tony, Pat, big Dom, little Dom and Sarah. Service is invariably friendly, helpful and professional. Located in the bowels of Parliament House, Aussies' regular customers are the staffers and public servants based in the House, but its clientele swells during sitting weeks, when Parliament House accommodates up to 5000 itinerant politicians, support staff and public servants. Best known for its coffee, for which there is a constant queue, Aussies also sells a range of home made pasta dishes, sandwiches, rolls, salads and muffins. It's also a store offering everything from newspapers, wine, and chocolate to tissues and painkillers - all the essentials of political life.

  5. Try Portia's Place... The energy levels of the owner of Portia’s Place is never ending, but the real reason this restaurant’s long list of loyal customers visit time and again is the award winning Chinese food (and, for some, the opportunity to hob nob with Canberra’s politicians when Parliament is sitting).

    Portia Lowery’s menu of traditional dishes from every region in China showcases about 50 mains. The blend of flavours is unique and the quality top notch. It’s no wonder Portia has won Best Chinese Restaurant (Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence), more than once.

    11 Kennedy St

    Kingston 2604.

    (02) 6239 7970

    Open 7days for lunch and dinner

    Closed Sat lunch

  6. I would think at their desk!  There is a lot of work to be done running a country.
