I am wondering where I could do what ever I wanted. US recpgnizes a 12 mile territorial zone, but a 200 mile exclusive economical zone.

A) Am I in international waters if I am 15 miles of the shore or 200 miles?

B) Is there a law that would prohibit me from, VERY hypothetical, build my own island with sand and stones in international waters?

C) To B, do I have to be outside of the 12 mile or 200 mile zone to be able to do this and be considered in international waters?

Thanks

  1. From what has been answered in the past, it appears 200 miles is the limit.  You could build your own island but unless you had a way to defend it, some country could claim it for theirs.  See the below reference.
