  1. The Witwatersrand basin is the largest gold deposit yet discovered.  It was discovered in the 1800s and 40% of all the gold ever mined comes from these mines.There are a number of mines exploiting this deposit.  The gold is hosted in sedimentary conglomerates of Archaean age.   It is an unusual type of deposit, and still has huge reserves, although nowadays these are mostly very deep, and require considerable expense to extract.




  2. The largest gold resources in the world were found in the area of the Witwatersrand, in Sourth Africa.  There are several major mines in Johannesburg.

    Gold is rare and valuable.  Pure gold is currently worth $786 / troy ounce.  So you go mine it wherever you can find it.
