Where are the "hidden" slaughter by products?

At the grocery store, what do I need to look for in the ingredients for all the "hidden" meat by products? I know gelatin, which I found in my granola bars, but had no idea. I'm new to the whole vegetarian thing. I've decided to eat dairy and products made with eggs.

  1. here is a link to a VERY comprehensive list of animal slaughter byproducts, courtesy of the "Caring Consumer" website.

    http://www.caringconsumer.com/resources_...

some common ingredients to look out for are:

    rennet (in some cheeses)

    gelatin

    lard

bone char (used in refining sugar)

    cholesterol

    cochineal (a coloring)

isinglass (used in clarifying wine and other alcohols)

    lecithin

    pepsin

    stearic acid

    tallow

i would suggest visiting the website i listed though, because they have a HUGE list along with descriptions of what each ingredient actually is.

good luck, and good for you for going veg =)

  2. don't eat any processed foods.  there maybe meat by products that are not listed on the label.  unless the label states vegetarian.  there are some fats used that come from animals. hope this helps.  good luck

  3. Refined sugar & Bleached flour. They both use bone char.
