My girlfriend works at downtown Toronto, King St W. She will be living alone in the town and we are looking for safest place in the town yet easily accessible to downtown Toronto to the job place.

Keeping that in mind, what are the best (ie. Safe) areas of Toronto to live in, that will allow her the shortest commute to work.

Is west of High Park (Windermere Ave to be precise) safe? Are there any other safe areas, with groceries nearby?

  1. Windermere is a great choice (I grew up around there) and accesible to the public transportation and Bloor St. West by Runnymede has not only a large No Frills grocery store but many small fruit/vegetable markets.

  2. Most areas in Toronto are quit safe.  I was advised to stay away from some sections of Jane Street, but otherwise no problems.  My daughter lives in Bloor West Village around Beresford and they walk at night through the neighborhood, including on Bloor St., and have no trouble.  That area is very quiet generally, a neighborhood of old houses that have been converted to two or three apartments.  Rent is reasonable - about $1200 including heat and hot water for a nice sized 2 bedroom on the main floor of one of these older homes.  There is a grocery store within walking distance, lots of street side markets, Chapters, some fast food, a drug store, a small park area - all within walking distance.  Best of luck, and I hope she finds somewhere nice.

  3. This perception that Toronto is dangerous is getting ridiculous and exhausting. Toronto is generally a safe city, and continues to rank as one of the most safest cities in the world.

King St. W. is generally safe. I can't say it will be so 24/7, because there might be a shooting going on there right now, but the section immediately west of Yonge Street is a business/classy entertainment strip so the chances are slim (it's known that areas of higher income are less susceptible to street crime).

However, it's expensive to live along that part of King St. W. High Park is fine, some of it is old money, and therefore may be just as expensive. But Windermere Avenue no where close to King St. W. Depending along where King St. W. your girlfriend will be working, it may take her up to half an hour to commute by public transit. You'll have to provide a specific intersection for a more concise answer.

There is a store selling groceries every few blocks on main roads, so don't worry about it. I know you want your girlfriend to be safe, but don't get to the point of paranoia. I'm a young woman who goes around all over Toronto unescorted--I just practice common sense and I'm fine.

  4. uptown

  5. honestly, toronto is so safe in general...the safest in canada- safer than regina because there are so many people there are a lot of eyes on the street - free surveillance.

But i worked around where she worked and i would recommend living anywhere along the yonge subway line - its quick to get downtown by just hopping on the subway.

high park is a middle-upper income neighbourhood so it might be a bit expensive.  yonge and eglinton might be more affordable.  south of there is again, more expensive.  living in an old downtown neighbourhood like bloor and spadina area, o r west one bloor str is affordable too, and because its a neighbourhood its got lots of amenities.  so living along the bloor subway line is great too.  west of ossington station.

    good luck!

p.s. don't worry too much! has she lived in a city before?
