Where are there Draft/Belgian/Clydesdale rentals for my 6'8", 350 lb, 30 year old BF to ride first horse ever?

My sweetheart has always wanted to go horseback riding but as a child his mother would never let him. By the time he was 12 he was 6'3" and 240 lbs. Now he is a martial arts black belt at 6'8" and 350 lbs. He's been waiting 30 years to ride a horse and for his 31st birthday in September I am trying to find a place with Draft, Belgian, Clydesdale, or Warhorses of some sort that he could ride safely without injuring the horse. We live in California but I would take him to anywhere in CA, NV, UT, OR, WA, ID, or AZ. If you know anywhere, please e-mail a response. Thanks so much.

  1. I would ask the folks in the forum of the web-site listed below.

  2. Horses are pretty strong. I bet you a regular quarter horse could carry him. Big draft horses like that usually aren't trained to ride. They are trained to pull stuff. Way different.

  3. It is becoming more common to see riders on draft horses.  The opposite of draft is hotblood.  While larger hotbloods could carry him for easy rides, there will be limitations.

Check for Percherons and Fresians.  Knights of old rode them while wearing full armor.  (Movies are highly inaccurate in showing the knights on Arabs and other hotbloods.)

Also, some states have limitations on how much a person can weigh when renting a horse, so definitely ask about that.

Be sure you explain his inexperience to the stables manager.
