1. When the street has a double yellow line. That applies to all states.

  2. On the highway, on one way streets and at an intersection in most cases.

  3. I didn't think they were ever legal but I guess it depends on your state. Check out the link

  4. In California, you can't make one in front of a fire station or across a double yellow line, or acoss a double, double yellow line.

Not true. You may make a U-turn across double yellow lines but not 4 yellow lines.

You can make a U-turn at an intersection or in the middle of a block provided it does not break any other restrictions: It must be safe, approaching traffic may not be closer than 200 feet, and you may not make a U-turn in a 'commercial' district which includes churches, apartments, multiple dwelling units, and so on.

  5. In California, you can't make one in front of a fire station or across a double yellow line, or acoss a double, double yellow line.

  6. The laws vary from state to state of province to province but here are a few laws that I am sure would be in most jurisdictions:

    1. Not in a curve

    2. not at the crest of a hill (where you cannot see very far away)

    3. contrary to any sign prohibiting it.

    4. not at a traffic signal light unless there is a sing authorizing it.

    5. some cities have bylaws prohibiting it anywhere in between blocks.
