What you have to do first is realize what you would love to do as far as event planning.  The reason I say this is because there are committees and then there are divisions that do this type of work all day.  You need to find out what type of situation will you benefit from and which one can benefit from you.  

Career Builder, Local Newspaper, Local government website, City or County Business department, City Board, History Division, and etc.

Check with the large hotels, the convention Center, and the Superdome.
