I'm switching all the lightbulbs in my house to energy saving ones and want to buy them all together so I can hopefully save money buying in bulb. I need 10 normal standard bulb shaped bayonet ones and 11 spotlight shaped s***w ones.

Can anyone tell me where I can get the best deal on them? Thanks

  1. Tis the season.  Just go and buy yourself a string of Christmas lights.  You'll get at least 35 light bulbs that use only milliwatts each and pay only a couple of dollars for the whole string.  If you want to use them throughout your house, just add some extra wire between each bulb and string them up throughout your whole house.  An additional benefit is that, being incandescent bulbs, they work just fine with dimmer switches, although you may find that they render dimming unnecessary.

  2. Probably not something you want to buy the cheapest you can find.  You want quality and good spectrum of light.  Cheap isn't best.

  3. I bought some bayonet fitting ones in morrisons for 39p each, and dimmer switches don't work with them.

  4. TESCO!

  5. What a good marketing con this is, I wonder how much money will be made from this, why are they so much more expensive than normal bulbs? I would bet that the profit margin is enormous on them, as for saving energy, we are being forced to switch over to digital TV soon, freeview boxes not only have to be purchased they have to be run also, on average a freeview box uses one unit of electricity for eleven hours of use which costs 14p, how many extra millions of units will be used in the UK when we are fully digital? and how much extra money will be made by the electric companies, makers of freeview boxes and the government because of this, I will stock up with ordinary light bulbs and keep on using them for as long as I can, if they are so keen to have everybody use energy saving bulbs, then they should be supplied at a reasonable cost.

  6. The cheapest place to buy them is Costco or Sams. As for the dimmer, you have to get special ones that are made for dimmers.

  7. i'd say something like home depot or wal mart

  8. Tesco ones start at 81p. Dont know about the dimmer sorry!

  9. 7 packs of 3 from IKEA, used to be £1.99 a pack but believe they have gone up in price to around £2.50 (not sure and not in current catalogue but always in-store).

  10. Yes - Wilkos have them at around £1 - although I got a great deal at Tescos earlier in the year and got them for 10p each - special clearance offer - bought 20 and not used most of them yet and the electricity were giving 2 away free.

Most of the fluorescent types will not work on a dimmer - the latest energy saving ones can be used on a dimmer but they are more expensive.

  11. In UK?   Wilkinsons

  12. Most good electrical shops (Hate to admit it but Tesco is probably cheapest)    Do not work with dimmers yet....being worked on.

  13. b &q very good and cheap

  14. I got mine at Sam's club in TN. Dimmers don't work on florescent bulbs.

  15. The cheapest compact florescent Light bulb is the right one.

Different fixtures and different rooms want different bulbs.

Watts and lumen's are one measurement, watts =power consumed and watts equivalency =the power comparison to incandescents.  Lumen's is amount of light output.

then you have shape, length and weight.  different fixtures do better with different bulbs.

When a fixture says maximum 60watts for examples, that means 60 real watts, not a 60 watt equivalency.

Anothe biggy is the light color, expressed either in words or in numbers.  soft white or warm white 2200K, cool white about 3500k, daylight is about 4500k and full spectrum is about 5500k.

the higher the k number the whiter the light is.

Warm white bulbs are more like the old incandescents and some people really like that look.  but for better color accuracy, like working on clothes or paint,  go for the daylight CFL's.

When you buy your bulbs buy from a place that will let you bring the excess back for credit.  buy lots of different wattage's, shapes and light color.  swap them around till you are happy, bring the xtras back for credit.

This is the way to do it, be the happiest, and not waste gas with lots of return trips.

Buy from the places with real good prices and real good selection.

    Watch your electric bill plummet.

I am at less than a dollar a day, including electric kitchen stove and clothes dryer.
