I have this old piano keyboard that I haven't used for ages, but I lost the adaptor for it so I was just wondering what sort of shops sell adaptors? what do I ask them?

  1. Due to the different voltages, different current ratings, and most importantly, MANY different plug sizes, you won't find them at most stores.  Radio Shack makes a business out of having just what you need.  It costs a little more than if you already KNOW exactly what you need (model#) and go online to order in volume, but this way, you get what you need, you don't have to order any minimums, and it's available immediately.

  2. Musician Friend would be another good place to check.  You do need to make sure the power supply has the right connector and can supply the necessary current.

  3. Adding to Percival's answer, you need to know the specifications of your keyboard as to how much current at 9V it uses before you go out looking for just a 9V adaptor.  Most of the Wall Transformer type adaptors are not regulated and only produce the voltage required when you meet their current capabilities as indicated on the unit.  This is why you need to know how much current your keyboard requires for normal operation.  Then there is a more costly regulated power supply that has an adjustable voltage and high current capability to suit your needs.  Need to do some research.  Here is a website that deals with keyboard power units.
