My partner is in the building trade and sometimes needs to be able to see into very small spaces (e.g. yesterday he cut a small hole in a ceiling, to try to ascertain which way the joists were running, but he couldn't see and kept having to cut more and more of it away till he ended up with quite a large hole!).

I have looked on Amazon and serached on Google but the only ones advertised are toy ones and they're not even currently available on Amazon!

Thanks :o)

  1. You can make one out of an orange juice carton and two compact mirrors -

At the top of one side of the carton, use a pencil to make three holes in a diagonal line.

Start at the top left corner of the box and head down towards the right.

Make three more holes in the same way at the bottom.

Flip the carton over, so that the side that was on the table is now facing up.

Make two more sets of holes like before, but this time starting in the top right corner of the box, and heading down to the left.

Take a look at the holes you made at the bottom of the carton. The holes in the corner of each side are either side of the face you now need to work on.

At the bottom of this side of the carton, make four holes in the shape of a rectangle.

On the opposite side to this one, make four more holes in the shape of a rectangle - this time at the top of the carton.

The holes you've made, are all to help you cut the box. Cut out the rectangle at the top of the box.

Do the same at the bottom of the carton.

Then cut down all the diagonal lines.

Finally slide the mirrors into the diagonal slots that you've just cut.

To make the periscope work as well as possible the two mirrors must be placed at exactly the same angle.

To do this, before you make the holes, cut a piece of card into a triangle shape and mark out where the holes will go.

Use the same piece of card to mark out where the holes will go at the top.

  2. He can ascertain which way the joist run by simply tapping the ceiling with his finger and listening to the pitch.  When you hit a joist it will sound solid and not hollow.  I if I was a property owner I would be skeptical of someone that had to drill a hole to figure that out

  3. Russian Army/ Navy surplus store? Seriously, just attach a small mirror to the end of a stick, like you would use to see up a girls skirt when you were at school. Mechanics sometimes use them to see into an awkward place under a car, dead simple.

  4. Check out Ebay for everthing first...even if it's just a price comparison!  You just may luck out there.
