Where can I buy a WiFi Link or something similar (I want to create a little bit of WiFi from any computer)?

I would love to find something that you can plug into any computer with any type of internet access (Home through DSL, work through through corporate Wifi, PC connected to cell phone access). Then, the device would project some WiFi and it would use the PC's internet access to interact with the the Network.

This is so I can demo internet applications on various WiFi devices, some of which won't connect through corporate WiFi, etc. Also it would make life easier than trying to connect each device in each situation, even in the few cases where it is possible.

Here's a picture of the type of thing I'm looking for:

But they are sold out . . .

  1. You could try this instead:

However, you use any old Wifi adapter (it can be USB or PCI) and turn it into a AP by setting it into ad-hoc mode.

The ad-hoc mode is compatible with the PSP, some smartphones, and other computers, but not the Nintendo DS (it uses it's own proprietary wireless format).

  2. Laptop with ethernet and wifi.  Use Internet Connection Sharing (it's part of Windows - look in Widows Help) to share the wifi adapter.

Question - how are you going to connect to a corporate network that doesn't want unsecured connections?  Doing what you ask is destroying their corporate network security - I certainly wouldn't allow you to do it on my network.  (Unless the devices you want to demonstrate only have to connect to a computer, not to the internet, in which case you could just carry a little router around with you.  The d-Link 730AP http://www.dlinkshop.com/product.asp?sku... would do the job.  And it fits in a shirt pocket.)

  3. Check here:

    You can find it.

    Good luck!
