Word of mouth works great, also look for a divorce sale, I know that sounds mean but an angry wife will sell her soon to be ex husbands pool table very cheap just to get even.

You have a few options for getting a good deal on a quality pool table.  You must bear in mind that wherever you find one, you will have to get a professional installer to disassemble it, and reassemble it in your home.  This is not a do-it-yourself job.  You can often find very good deals in your local paper.  People move all the time and they don't want to take their table with them.  You can often find quality slate tables between $500-1000, with the condition that you have to move it out.  You can also go to a billiards retail store.  They often have used and refurbished tables in their showroom, and you might get a discount on delivery and setup if you go right to the source.  Additionally, you might also get an accessories package by purchasing from a dealer.  Whatever you do, do not buy once of those cheap department store knock-offs.  You will be constantly let down by them.  So, no Wal-Mart specials, okay?  Happy hunting.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
