Where can I buy a cow?

This was a question from my Gambian relative. I had to admit that I didn't know: where from, how much, what regulations govern ownership. Can anyone shed any light on this - obviously one would need the land/space to ensure it's welfare.

I buy calves so I generally by from local farmers whenever possible, most usually they would still have the cow and sometimes the bull on hand so that you may veiw the condition of the parents. You will not have that option buying from a market or auction. Also is the cow for food or milk? If for milk it is hardly worth owning one cow, you'll spend more caring for the animal daily than it's worth. If it is for food, you will want to have at least 1-2 acres of grazing land, plus you will still have to buy supplemental food and vet bills if a problem occurs. You may be better of in this case buying a grown cow from a farm (big money) and buchering it, or go in with 1 or 2 other people and split the cost, a good sized cow would supply each person with a few hundred pounds of meat.

I wouldnt reccomend a whole one as you may get indigestion. Go to Tescos and you can get little packets of cow which you may find more manageable

have you looked into oxfam, they have many great deals on buying animals for third world countries, or you could just go to a cattle market, i am sure there will be one near you, they will give you all the advice you needxx

first you would have to check with your local and state laws, if you live inside city limits you most likely cant keep it in your backyard.

second if you have the land, go to your local farmers auction.

depends on what kind of cow you want.  not all breeds sell for the same price

They would know better than you. When I sold mine, I got five neands for it. One grew into a huge plant but I didn't climb up in case there was a giant up there.
