Where can I buy a pilot's seat from a commercial airliner?

I don't know if it's even possible but my father is an aviation enthusiast and his birthday is coming up. It has always been something I've thought about so I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to buy one.

  1. Just like everything else, you can find it on eBay.  I was just over there and there's a pair of seats off a Gulfstream II business jet with an opening bid of $1,000.00.

Cockpit seats will always have some residual value, unless the airplane they're from is so old that there's practically none left in service (707s, L1011s, etc.).  The cabin seats, however, are almost 'throwaway' items as no one wants them.  I worked for a company that parted out old airliners for nearly two years in Roswell, NM, and typically the cockpit seats were removed and sold, but frequently the cabin seats were still in place when the airplane was crushed.

I work as a purchaser for an aircraft repair station, so send me an e-mail and I'll give you the contact information for some parts brokers that should be able to help you out.  Or you might check out the Airline Pilot's Historical Society, that sells commercial aircraft memorabilia (there's a link below).  They did, at least at one point, have a cockpit observer's seat from a 727 available, and pictured on their website.

  2. Faeth Aircraft in Northern California they have just about anything from retired airplanes. Hope this helps :)

  3. like the first guy said buy from a scrap yard of the airline. Usually they have items for bidding try to see the list they want to sell,  the pilot seat might be one of them.

  4. Look for an aircraft scrapping yard near you. They will usually have something.

When I wanted a sofa for my hangar, I went to a salvage yard near where I live. Even though they specialize in light aircraft, they had several seats from airliners. I bought a row of three, mounted them on a heavy piece of plywood, cleaned them up, and now have a great sofa.

They will vary greatly in price depending upon type and condition. I bought a row of coach seats covered in cloth that cost me $75 for the lot. Leather first class seats will be more (just like on the plane!).

If you email me I can give you the names of a couple. If you're not close to either, than you may have to pay shipping. Good luck.

  5. Aircraft yard. Or sneak into an airport and rip one out of a parked boeing. if you can't get him one. Go to your local airport and see if someone can fly you and your dad around. Maybe pull some 0 g manouvers and such.

  6. Why do you want to buy another Father? Surely the one you've got is the best?
