In New York City and Washington D.C. I plan to get one so that I can use it in the States. Can I get those in convenient stores?

yes... they sell them at convenience stores (Bodegas) and all the major large pharmacies (CVS, Duane Reade, Rite Aid)

You can also pick them up at the numerous cell phone stores around the city
