  1. wal-mart

  2. Whatever you do, do NOT shop at Wal Mart!!!! They are ruining the US economy. If they still bought only US made products, (as Sam promised when he first opened Wal Mart), we wouldn't be losing millions of jobs and billions of dollars to countries like China...

    Now.... back to your question....

Since you're just starting out I'd recommend getting a long board, (at least 9' long). They're the easiest to learn on because you can catch waves easy and you can balance and stand up easy.

You can borrow one, rent one or get a used one from a shop , a newspaper ad, Craigslist, etc.

I'd start by riding the whitewater first so you get the feel for it before you head out to the waves. Not sure where you live but a great beach for learning is Bolsa Chica in Huntington Beach.

Here's a great article I always recommend to beginners called 'Learn How to Surf in 1 Day':

Good luck and have fun.  :-)
