Where can I buy an unusual, high quality chess set? (UK)?

Question

I've seen really nice ones in magazines and things but can't seem to find any on the high street.

It has to be unusual and stylish!

I've seen glass ones before and highly contemporary ones with stylised pieces, but I don't know where they were from!

So far I have only found one in John Lewis, and it's not that exciting or special.

I want to buy from a shop, not online, as I need it for a 30th birthday gift next week.

There is a store in a mall near my house, and they have high quality stuff.  Even if you have to buy online they are very reputable.

You probably won't find one in a store. There just is not enough demand for chess stores, yet

I live in a city of 2.5 million people and I know for fact there is only 3 place that sell sets above the standard cheap-o cardboard set. And those three places only sell vinyl competition sets.

The best places for sets is The House of Stauton.

Unfortunately, they sell them online and they are in the U.S.

You can google to get to their website and maybe get a gift card in time.

The best place to get a set is the London Chess Centre (369 Euston Rd NW1, phone [phone]).

However, if you are buying this for someone who plays a lot of chess, I would advise you not to buy an "unusual and stylish" set. These sorts of sets aren't good for practical play and people who play chess a lot dread getting these sort of gifts. A nice, weighted wood or even a quality weighted plastic set is much better and can take a bit of wear and tear.

If you're just buying it as a decorative object though or for someone that plays once in a blue moon, that's different.

In any case the Chess Centre will be able to help you out. You can even download their catalogue.
