I am looking to get a cloak known as a Brat that was worn in ancient Ireland, It was a hoodless cloak that fastened with a brooch at the shoulder of your sword arm,(left or right) so as to keep warm and allow access to sword. I have found plenty of hooded cloaks that clasp in front form later periods and tons of silly renaissance c**p. I am just looking for the simple hoodless rectangular brooch at shoulder Brat or cloak to wear as a coat to keep warm. Also I would settle for a Native American Cloak and pin that is constructed as Brat but with native weaves and what not, but preferably wool. ALso I know where to get kilts but what about really nice moccasins , leather thong type shoes or basically a thin leather shoe or boot, preferably mid shin leather boot? Does anyone know where I can get these items? I am not a renaissance dork but want to wear a Brat for coat and leather boots. When I can I will wear a kilt too. I don't care whether Norse, Irish, Scottish or Native. Thank you.

  1. I found this

  2. go to www.moccasinhouse.com

  3. That's funny, I'm joining the SCA as an ancient Celt and making by own leine and brat. Email me.

    www.sca.org

They have lots of merchants listed.

  4. a lot of occult stores will carry them.

  5. The cloak you refer to was just a length of cloth. Later on when tartans and tweeds emerged to define the clans these cloaks were known as a plaid.

The kilt was fashioned from the plaid and became established in the 18th century as formal dress. Each plaid was made of 5yards of woolen cloth. There is still the same length of plaid in a dress kilt, which is why they were so heavy.

They were also very cumbersome in practice, for in the cold and damp they absorbed moisture and could freeze rigid in the rawer weather.

The cloak pins are still available from Celtic jewelry makers. In recent memory they were made into brooches often worn by the ladies.

These items, the boots and dress jackets can  be purchased from  traditional tailors in Scotland. I'm sure many now have websites.
