Ikea has those propreitary screws, a hex kind of thing. I am looking to be able to use my power drill / or screwdriver to help with the assembly of some units. I was hoping someone knew where to get them in Canada (Southern Ontario)

  1. You can buy it from Amazon, cheaper than anywhere alse:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i...

    Hope that can help you/.

  2. I bought a great set of bits with 40 or so different profiles from a True Value store.  Any hardware store should be able to help you out.

  3. You can get the bits you need at any hardware store.

WARNING -- IKEA and most other DIY furniture is made of fibreboard and does not take to being assembled with power tools. That is why they supply the tool with the furniture kit.

Now, it can be done with a power screwdriver or a drill but certain precautions have to be taken. If using a drill use one with a clutch a never go past the #2 setting. You will destroy the s***w holes and 'blow out' pieces of the furniture. Use the IKEA tool to finish tightening the s***w. Same for the power screwdriver. Get one with a clutch.

I never use power tools for these units anymore. I've ruined more pieces than I care to count. Ikea gave me warranty for the first ones; then they started to make me wait while they ordered the piece I had ruined instead of replacing the whole unit.

  4. we have a ton of ikea furniture.

all you need is included wrench.  Other than that, overtightening might crack the wood or strip the s***w especially since most of the pieces are veneer and not solid wood.

  5. By the way, you do not want a "drill" bit.  Drills make holes.  You want an odd s***w driver bit.  The first guy is right -- probably any hardware store has this, unless Ikea is really evil.

  6. CANADIAN TIRE has all the bits you need

  7. Try any hardware store or home center.  Bring a s***w with you and they will be able to set you up with the tip you need.  Good luck.

  8. It sounds like an Allen wrench type bit.  Like the others said, take it to any hardware store and they'll be able to set you up.  If your drill has different clutch settings then start low and work your way up the settings.  Ikea furniture isn't the strongest stuff in the world and it would be very, very easy to destroy what you're trying to assemble if you aren't careful.
