  1. The time is getting short to buy them in stores and parking lot nurseries.

After Memorial Day, they start cutting them to 1/2 price.   Most are annuals, so they should already be in the ground.    Minnesota is probably still selling well, because the summer starts later.

You can get clippings from people too.

I sometimes spend avg amt of money on some plants then make lots of them from one.  Either by seeds, or clippings.

  2. I've always found stores Like Lowes and Home Depot to be the cheapest.  However the disadvantage to buying plants there is that they do not receive the same care as they get at a nursery.  And they are usually smaller plants.

  3. Flowers? Try these:

    A. Johnson & Sons Florist

    1738 Grand Ave

    Saint Paul, MN 55105-1806

    (651) 695-3211

    Soderberg's Florist

    3305 E Lake St

    Minneapolis, MN 55406-2030

    (612) 724-3606

    Schaaf Floral

    6554 University Ave NE

    Minneapolis, MN 55432-4330

    (763) 571-4600

These are all places you could try.

  4. That depends on how "Cheap" you want to get. I'm an avid gardener and collect seeds from neighbors with their permission, collect seeds from wildfires in abandoned areas, get free seeds from the local garden club (members may even give plants away from their garden as they downsize their bloomers) and I also get cuttings from plants and place them in root hormone to promote growth.

The problem with seeds, of course, is that seeds take longer to grow than transplants from the store.

Some garden shops reduce plants that are out of season or are going dormant.  And most big box stores reduce all their plants by Halloween to make way for

    Thanksgiving/Christmas stuff.

You can also shop fleamarkets, swap meets for practical give-aways.

Grocery stores are the least best place to buy plants.  Try an ACE Garden shop instead, someplace that hires an experienced gardener.

And believe it or not, I had great luck with plants from K-Mart.

Your local university may also have a plant science center and can give you furthur advice.
