Find a salvage yard that specializes in BMW and other similar cars.  Look for as low a milage "used engine" that you can afford keeping in mind that it has to be swapped out.   Find a BMW mechanic who is wiling to do the work off work hours on his own for extra money.  Figure that price into what it's going to cost.  Have them mechanic help you locate a good used engine.  (also ask him how much he'd charge to rebuild your old engine unless yours is totally fried that is)

A good rebuilt one is around $5000 plus labor to put it in. That's US prices.  If no one in Canada will do it look the other side of the border and locate a BMW mechanic willing to do it.
