I want to raise fruits and vegetables for my families use. I also want to raise poultry and rabbits for meat. I prefer land that isn't located in or near towns.

  1. West Central Ohio has the best farmland and is far from cities. My top choice would be Darke County. Preble (where I have a small produce farm) is another good choice.

  2. My suggestion to you would be to locate the general geographic area that you wish to live and then contact several real estate agents that deal with agricultural properties to help you locate any parcels that may be available.  Be sure that these agents understand ag. business and what your intentions are for this land.  Residential agents are more in tune to the urban market.  Call the local Farm Burea in the various counties and ask them if they might suggest several RE agents that they might know and check the yellow pages under "Farm Management" as these folks usually have a real estate license as well and may be able to help you find the type of parcel that you are looking for for your family.

Be sure to use good business sense when buying this land.  The land market at this time is at record high levels and small parcels such as you are looking for often times are thought of as residential lots and will be priced above the agricultural rate.  Depending on the county that you locate this land, may have different zoning laws and differing rates on property taxes as well.  Understand what the zoning and taxes will be on any parcel that you intend to place an offer on for purchase.
