I don't want to make the one based on a previous batch of yogurt, I want the bacillus so I can make fresh yogurt every day, sour yogurt, like Keffir.

  1. The bacteria is already present in milk just not in high concentration. I am unsure what Keffir is. Indians have a sweet yogurt (dahi). Another option is to use an existing yogurt to start your culture, it will be much cheaper that way also. You only need about 1 tablespoon generally. Sorry I can't help you more, but Good Luck

  2. yogurt and keffir are two different things. They taste similar, but are different  Kefir contains several major strains of friendly bacteria not commonly found in yogurt, Lactobacillus Caucasus, Leuconostoc, Acetobacter species, and Streptococcus species. It also contains beneficial yeasts, such as Saccharomyces kefir and Torula kefir.

You can buy that bacteria here:

  3. My mother was from Czechoslovakia. She always used yogurt to make more yogurt, including Keffir.

  4. You can purchase a good quality yoghurt that specifies live active bacterial cultures and use a couple of tablespoons of it to make your own batch.  You can just keep using a couple of tablespoons of each batch until the yoghurt starts to taste a little bitter, then you know that you need to refresh your culture.

Also,  most health food/supplement stores carry packages of active yoghurt cultures for making yoghurt at home.  If you can't find that, you can purchase probiotic capsules and open a couple into some warm milk and go from there in making yoghurt.

I have had success in making yoghurt with every method mentioned above.

    Hope that helps!

  5. My mom would buy this at the health food store. You should be able to find it there. If not, most health stores will put in an order for you. This yogurt is very sour, but I got used to the taste. It's so fresh and mom used to slice up some fresh mangoes and add it to the yogurt. It is an acquired taste, but I loved it in the end. And it's great for you too!
