Where can I buy wood boards to paint on?

I want to buy simple wood boards so I can paint on them, where can i find them? Also, would that place have a variety of sizes or will i have to tell them to slice it down to my requested size?

I've found that places like Home Depot are generally the best. You can get hardboard in a variety of sizes, and they will cut them to different sizes if you need. It's also very inexpensive. I've found that the smooth surface on one side takes gesso very well when sanded. Definitely my first choice for a ground.

Your local lumberyard should have boards like that... also try uncoated wood flooring... make sure they are not weather treated or it may peel your paint!

"Wood" panels for painting are  hardwood veneer  plywood as shown on the link.

Anything from an art supplier will be needlessly expensive.

You can get cabinet grade 7 ply  birch or maple veneer plywood in a home center in 4'x 8' sheets .

They will cut it up for you for a fee per cut.

For the price the art suppliers want  you can get an entire sheet & maybe a cheap circular saw for the same price at the  home center & cut it up yourself.

Tempered masonite is also an excellent alternative & is much less expensive than premium plywood.

I'm an old signpainter and we used to use paper coated plywood (Duraply) and Masonite. They take primer and paint very well and last a long time, I have seen some of my work that is 30 years old and looks like the day I painted it. The secret is to put a wax or some other kind of coating to wear away instead of the paint. Good luck.
