I love the start up sound on Ubuntu. I'd like to make it my ring tone... but need an mp3 download of the sound. Anyone know where I could download it?

  1. try asking the same question at ubuntuforums.org or at #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net

They will tell you the exact file. But I don't think it will be mp3. It might be wav or ogg which you can convert to mp3

  2. I dumped the Gnome desktop off my system last year so I'm not entirely sure of the names, but go to your /usr/share/sounds directory, and hunt for the right sound.  If you have alsa and aplay on your system, then open a terminal, cd to that directory, do an ls then issue the command aplay <likely candidate .wav or .ogg> until the startup sound comes out of your speaker.

Then it's a case of get some conversion software, if you don't have it already.

This is a good page discussing it:

Then put it on your ring tone.
