Where can I exchange US coinage in Canada, for US bills?

I have asked at 2 banks and a credit union, they won't do it.

Currency exchange places say they do not take coins.

If I go over the border to a bank in the states, will I need an account to exchange the coins? I know when I took Canadian coins to a bank in Canada they required me to have an account to exchange them.

Try an airport.  I'm not really sure if they are at every airport, but I've seen currency exchange booths in airport terminals and they don't seem to be affiliated with any specific banks.  Not sure if they take coins though.

Banks and credits unions in Canada are not required to take US coinage and they won't. It is too cumbersome for them

to handle shipping it back to the states. If you go over the line just go to the nearest bank and ask them to give you bills for

coins and you will have no problem and they will not ask you

to start an account. If worse comes to worse walk into a story and ask them if they need any change. Busy stores like to have customers give them change as it saves them having to to the bank to get it themselves. How much US coinage could you have?? Did you rob the mint of quarters:)

Canadian financial institutions generally will not accept American coins.  You'll likely have to take them to the US to exchange for banknotes.
