I have a family friend that is trying to look for his coat of arms, but he's half Chinese and you don't really see those. Where should he look to find or research it because Google and Yahoo have already been tried.

  1. I don't know because I don't do Chinese genealogy.  But I believe that Coat of Arms are mostly a European thing.  Furthermore, even in Europe, they were and still are assigned to INDIVIDUALS not to surnames.  People often think that a Coat of Arms belongs to anyone and everyone of the same last name and that all last names have one.  That is rubbish.  Only select individuals were granted one.  The rightful heir of one is the person who falls in the correct line.  That would be the first born son of the first born son of the first born son, etc. all the way from the person who was originally granted the Coat of Arms to their descendant today.  Even other descendants of that person cannot rightfully, legally claim the Coat of Arms if they do not fall in line of first born sons.

However, most Americans do not know this and do not care...........therefore, they will spend money on anything to hang on their wall, and there are companies out there who will be glad to sell it to them.  Most people have a better chance of winning the lottery than they have of being the rightful heir of a true Coat of Arms.

EDIT:  I was not bashing Americans.  I was stating the truth.  I am American too, born and raised.  People of all kinds and all nations can be morons.  Americans are no exceptions.  It was not like I was European bashing Americans.  I am American.

  2. Although many states and cities in China and the East now have coats of arms, coats of arms originated and were used almost entirely in Europe, not in China. In any case a coat of arms was granted to one man, his sons and their descendants (not just the eldest sons) and not to everyone who carried his surname, so it would be necessary to prove a lineage, by way of documentary evidence, back to the man who was originally granted the arms, in order to obtain permission to display them, this applies to everyone, no matter where the arms were originated.
