My mother recently gave me her 30+ year old Brother sewing machine. I am trying to play with it but she neglected to show me how to thread it! She tried to tell me over the phone but couldn't remember it well enough. Help if you can please!

  1. This website for Brother has downloadable manuals.  I did not see your model number listed - probably because it's 30 years old.  Look at the instructions for a couple of others and you may be able to figure it out.

  2. In addition to threading instructions, you're going to want to have a real manual for the machine -- check with Brother, or some of the used machine manual dealers.

If you're really stuck, try asking at the yahoo group "wefixit".

You'll want to know where all the oiling points are for the machine -- a machine this old is almost always going to need regular oiling with sewing machine oil (not 3-in-1 (it goos up) or WD-40 (it's a solvent, not a lubricant).  You can pick up a tube of oil in any fabric store or in the craft department of Walmart or similar stores... $2 will get you a lifetime supply for most people.

  3. Here's a couple great videos that show how to thread a sewing machine. Even with different models of machines, the basics are the same:

Here's a few other sites that might give some added information in print that may be of additional help:

Take your time - Go slow - Have fun!

  4. Your best bet since different machines thread differently, is to go to the website and see if a manual for your particular machine can be downloaded or ordered.
