I'm looking to buy a Digital Video Recorder (an "appliance" not a PC) that will work with free programing guides and NOT require monthly subscriptions. Any ideas?

  1. DVRs that are a component of a personal computer are the only way to digitally record television without a subscription. "Stand-alone" DVRs (ones that use a guide to record) will usually only work with one guide, there just isn't enough reason to build a stand-alone that will work with any guide. I recommend any DVR from Hauppage to use in a computer if you choose that route because they have a free guide that is accessible from the internet.

Lastly, if you don't have the space for new hardware on your computer you can easily buy a bare bones desktop, stick a large HDD in it, stick the DVR card in it, and call it a stand-alone DVR the total of which will probably cost you less than owning a TiVO.

  2. Hi theintrovertedgeek,

I think the Pioneer is a very good unit.

You can see it and read about it here - http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DVR-550H-S...
