This is a tropical plant but even if you live in the tropics, I would be very wary of growing one. Rattans are in the genus Calamus (and some other related genera) -- they are climbing palms that grow by using hooks (on a whip like structure called a flagellum) and have spines on their stems ...they can both be quite vicious.
