Today is my son's first birthday and I wanted to watch the tape of him being born for the first time. Unfortunatley It's on Mini DV Cassette tape and I don't know how I can watch it. I don't have a player because turns out they are very expensive and I don't have the camcorder either because we borrowd it to shoot the movie and the guy moved out of state.

I know they have those tapes where you can put the smaller tape inside of the VHS and it will work. Do they have some kind of a converter for these also? Help Please

  1. The DV casette can only be read by a machine that reads DV tapes.  The small VHS tapes can be read with an adapter because the tape inside is essentially the same.  I know there are people and stores that convert DV tapes to DVD for a small fee.

  2. No, Mini DV tapes, do not need converters, To play the tape, you must have a deck, or a camera to be able to view it on your TV VIA RCA cables.

The other alternative is to have a video production house in your area transfer the tape to a DVD.

  3. Unless you're going to get somebody to do it for you (professionally or a friend), your best bet is to buy a cheap MiniDV camcorder.  It doesn't have to be the same make as the one you used originally - they're all the same.
