craiges list attracts people who dont need horses I swear. I went through 4 pages and only saw a couple normal/good adds.

Also if you were willing to spend like $1800 there would be a lot more horses open to you that are probably better than the ones I listed.

Unfortunately Fred, kid friendly horses unless they are older than dirt or have something physically wrong with them still cost money.

You may try the Bakersfield Horse Auction which is held the first Monday of every month.  I understand that horses are going really cheap there and sometimes don't even make the price of running them through ($50.00).  

You can also post adds in your neighborhood feed/tack stores.  I know of a couple of horses out here where I live that the owner wants $700.00 for the pair and both are in their 20's.
