Ok, I understand what a subnet is, the definition of a subnet mask, and why a network would have multiple subnets.

I can't seem to find any decent tutorial that makes sense how to figure out a subnet mask and what IPs will be in a subnet with a given subnet mask! (255.255.255.0 excluded, it's when the numbers are something other than 255 or 0 that I get completely confused)

It would be nice if it uses 192.168.x.x for the example since I understand home networking fairly well.

  1. Try this one, it really is a good tutorial

http://www.learntosubnet.com/  (oops has to have the www sorry)

You can also play with the calculator at

    http://www.subnet-calculator.com/

You do need to have a good grasp of BINARY math for these to make good sense.

PS - To really get the hang of it, you need to exceed or expand beyond Class C (192.168.x.x) networks like working with Class A networks  (10.x.x.x)
