  1. You could phone and flyer local businesses to let them know you're having a food drive during a certain week, and tell them when you're coming to pick up the items. It will take some work, but you'll be snowed under with donations. Offer signage to put up in the offices to promote the drive.

Then people just have to bring it into work, and they feel good about it. Make sure you specify the kinds of things and food types you need (kitten/puppy, senior, brands or flavours you know the animals prefer). Our local Humane Society lists everything from pet food and bedding to office supplies, and the various animal-specific rescues indicate that besides food they need towels, food dishes, and so on.

  2. Obvious places - go to the web site for pet food manufacturers (Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, etc.) and look to see if they do donate food/services to recognized shelters, and how to make an application.  You can also check or vist local pet shops (Petland discount, petco, etc.) and see if they are able and willing to donate any excess inventory.  Slightly less obvious but worth a shot are either local supermarkets or bigbox stores (costco, target, walmart) and ask them if they will/can donate excess inventory.  Even less obvious, call local veterinarians, and ask if they can donate any 'free samples" they may get from distributors, or for the names of companies they know of that might be of assistance.

  3. Many pet places already donate.  you could organize a pet food "can" drive at your work or church etc or even as a school project. ask for pet food cans or dry & toys; cat & dog (ask the shelter first what they prefer).
