Question:

Where can I find a list of how competitive graduate schools are?

I am applying for graduate school and I would like to get into a ph.D program for computer science.

I was told to apply to at least three different types of schools:

1) I would get in if lighting strikes

2) Maybe I'll get in, Maybe I won't

3) I have a pretty good shot at getting in.

The only way I'll know what schools these are is if I find out a list of how competitive, or how demanding these grad schools are.

I would like to find a list, or if anyone knows from there own knowledge where I should be applying is fine to.

  1. Here's a ranking of some of the top schools.  But remember, there are a bunch of schools that offer programs that may not appear on this list or on the US News rankings (they usually only do the top 10 for any particular program).  I suggest looking for schools that have people working in the fields you're interested in, whether they are high-ranked or not - those are the people you need to know.

  2. US News and World Report usually comes out with an annual issue devoted to graduate schools.
