My wife and I are US citizens, looking to possibly move to Costa Rica. She is a physician. We are looking at rural/small towns in the Nicoya area

  1. My guess is that working for the Costa Rican government-run hospitals would be difficult, but there are also private hospitals where she could work.

I would suggest to contact the following places and enquire:

    Costa Rican College of Physicians:

    e-mail: info@medicos.sa.cr

(I'm sure there will be people who can read and write English at that office)

Clinica Biblica, founded by English-speaking missionaries:

    http://www.clinicabiblica.com/english/in...

UCIMED (Medical Sciences University), because they have agreements with American universities:

    http://www.ucimed.com/ucimed/index.htm

    contact: corderocc@ucimed.com

Your wife will have to bring her transcripts, diplomas and degrees with her because that's the first thing they will ask for if she wants to be recognized as a physician.

    Good luck!

  2. U must find the web pages of: Hospital CIMA, or Hospital clínica Bíblica

  3. You could check the job listings on craigslist, or post an ad yourself that says you are looking for an open doctor position. Craigslist has a section just for Costa Rica.

Do you know anyone in Costa Rica who could tell you some places that might be hiring?

  4. Are you Costa Rican or were you educated in Costa Rica?  I am not sure such a list exists for foreigners.  You have to be a Costa Rican to work for the government supported health care system and that makes up a big portion of the health sector.  Officially Costa Rica has a healthcare worker surplus and it is very difficult for a foreigner to practice there.  There are of course physician shortages in rural areas.
